Karachi Port has witnessed another major accident in a couple of weeks as a sugar-loaded trailer drowned into the sea within the limits of Karachi Port Trust losing a large quantity of sugar, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Sources revealed to 24NewsHD on Sunday that a trailer which was loaded with sugar bags veered off the wharf and slipped into the sea near KPT East Wharf Birth No. 5.

The sources said that the trailer’s brakes failed and it headed straight into the sea. However, the rescue teams saved the driver of the vehicle and fished him out.

According to the sources, there were 780 bags of sugar containing 50 kilos each belonging to the Trading Corporation of Pakistan loaded on the trailer which were completely wasted after getting soaked into the seawater. The TCP has to suffer a loss of thousands of rupees.

Reportedly, the MV Unity Cargo ship brought 33,000 tonnes of sugar from Dubai for the TCP on July 27. Due to shortage of labourers at KPT owing to the lockdown in Sindh, the unloading of sugar from the ship could not be completed.

The TCP had placed the order to provide the commodity to the Utility Stores Corporation in keeping with the decision of the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet.

Ten days ago, another cargo ship of Hong Kong ran aground the KPT channel after losing its anchors following the rough sea. The cargo ship is still stranded at the Karachi SeaView.

Sources said that the work on taking the trailer out of the sea would be started from tomorrow. But the KPT does not have necessary resources/equipment to bring it out, sources concluded.
