Pakistan records nine more corona deaths, 414 infections in a day

Pakistan has reported another nine deaths and 414 infections during the last 24 hours (Tuesday), showed the statistics released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Wednesday morning.

As per the NCOC data, after the addition of nine new deaths, the overall toll has now surged to 28,737 whereas the number of total infections now stood at 1,285,254 after adding the fresh 414 cases.

During the last 24 hours (Tuesday), a total of 42,381 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan whereas the positivity ratio stood at 0.97 percent. The number of patients in critical care was 896.

During the last 24 hours (Tuesday), as many as -112 patients have recovered from the virus whereas the total recoveries stood at 1,242,236. As of Wednesday, the total count of active cases in the country was recorded at 14,281.

As many as 475,820 coronavirus cases have so far been confirmed in Sindh, 443,185 in Punjab, 180,075 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 107,722 in Islamabad, 33,484 in Balochistan, 34,556 in Azad Kashmir and 10,412 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Moreover, 13,027 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab so far, 7,621 in Sindh, 5,846 in KP, 955 in Islamabad, 742 in Azad Kashmir, 360 in Balochistan and 186 in Gilgit Baltistan.

- WHO warns against blanket bans -

The World Health Organization says that blanket travel bans will not prevent the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

However it says over-60s and the vulnerable "should be advised to postpone travel".

- Markets slide on vaccine worries -

World stocks and oil prices slide, with the benchmark US oil price tumbling by more than five percent, after Moderna warns current vaccines might be less effective at fending off the Omicron variant.

- Scholz backs mandatory jabs -

The Netherlands will free a couple who absconded from a quarantine hotel but were later arrested after they boarded a flight to Spain over the weekend, their lawyer says.

- Court OKs German lockdown -

Germany's constitutional court backs the country's partial lockdown, saying sweeping restrictions such as curfews, school closures and contact restrictions are lawful.

- More than 5.2 million dead - 

The coronavirus has killed at least 5,206,370 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT on Tuesday. 

The US has suffered the most Covid-related deaths with 778,601, followed by Brazil with 614,376, India with 468,980, Mexico with 293,950 and Russia with 275,193.

The countries with the most new deaths are the US with 1,620, followed by Russia with 1,229 and Ukraine with 561.

Taking into account excess mortality linked to Covid-19, the World Health Organization estimates the overall death toll could be two to three times higher.
