The Punjab Police personnel repelled yet another attack by militants on Jhangi (Hazrat Umar Farooq) checkpoint at Taunsa Sharif late Friday night, forcing the attackers to flee, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday.

According to the Punjab Police spokesman, 15 to 20 militants, armed with the latest weapons, including rocket launchers and hand grenades, taking advantage of darkness, stormed the checkpoint from different directions.

The spokesman added that RPO Dera Ghazi Khan Captain (r) Sajjad Hassan Khan Manj led the police operation, while DPO Dera Ghazi Khan Syed Ali also accompanied them.

He elaborated that several militants lost their lives in the incident, while soon after the incident, police teams launched search operation in the area.

The spokesman went on to say that last year too, on the night between May 1 and May 2, the militants had attacked the same checkpoint, but failed.   “This is the 18th attack by militants on border checkpoints in the last two years which the provincial police have foiled.”

Meanwhile, Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar has said that the cops’ preparedness and alertness did not let militants succeed in their designs. “All police personnel in the last night attack remained safe and their morale is high,” he has informed.

He has further said that on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Jhangi checkpoint has been made more secure by increasing the strength of the police personnel deputed there and providing them with sophisticated weapons.

The IGP has applauded the police personnel for foiling the attack on the checkpoint.
