The caretaker federal government has decided to keep the petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices unchanged for the next fortnight starting from January 1, 2024, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.
However, it has increased the price of the light diesel by Rs 1.11 per litre and decreased the kerosene oil's price by Rs 2.19 per litre.
According to a notification, the price of petrol has been kept at Rs 267.34 per litre while the rate of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) has remained unchanged at Rs 276.21 per litre.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar approved the new fuel prices which will be effective from Sunday midnight and remain in place till January 15, 2024.
The country fixes fuel prices on a fortnightly basis after evaluating fluctuating international energy market costs and the rupee-dollar parity to transfer the impact on domestic consumers.
The government is currently charging about Rs80 per litre tax on both petrol and HSD, despite having zero general sales tax (GST) on all petroleum products. The government is also levying Rs60 per litre petroleum development levy (PDL) on both products.
