All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani Wednesday passed away during the house arrest from Modi Sarkar in Indian Occupied Kashmir.
Geelani, an uncompromising campaigner against Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan region, had been under house arrest for the past 11 years.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani belonged to Soporo Town of district Baramulla and he was one of the strongest voices in favour of Kashmir's accession to Pakistan.
Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani has been a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir and also a member of the well-known International Muslim Forum Rabita-e-Alam-e-Islami.
Geelani was born on September 29, 1929, and was a pro-Pakistani Kashmiri separatist leader in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
He founded Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and served as the chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, a conglomerate of pro-separatist parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
He was also an MLA from the Soporo constituency of Jammu and Kashmir in 1972, 1977 and in 1987.
He quit the Hurriyat leadership in June 2020.
Meanwhile, Indian authorities imposed a security clampdown in Occupied Kashmir after the death of separatist icon Syed Ali Geelani at the age of 92, residents said.
Troops put up barbed wire rolls and barricades on roads leading to Geelani's house in the main city of Srinagar after the family announced the death. Media reports said a curfew would be imposed.
