Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar has announced revoking Punjab Privileges (Amendment) Act 2021, a handout said on Friday.
He made the announcement as he visited a sit-in staged by journalists against the new law in front of Governor House on the call of PFUJ’s Rana Azeem, Shahzad Hussain Butt and EMRA head Asif Butt.
He pledged to protect journalists’ rights and announced accepting all of their demands making them call off the protest.
Talking to the media, the governor said Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, Punjab Assembly Speaker Ch Parvez Elahi are on the same page on such an issue. He told the media persons that he spoke to the Punjab Assembly Parvez over phone.
“We will revoke all the articles regarding journalists from this bill through amendments and change the bill keeping in view the demands of all the journalists,” the governor averred, adding that Prime Minister Imran Khan and the PTI strongly believe in freedom of the press.
He recalled: “I struggled all my life for freedom of the press and government cannot event think of muzzling the media. Journalists will find me standing by them in tough times.”
The governor said that the way journalists fighting their case in the scorching heat it showed they are powerful and are active as well.”
