The federal government has approved amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, to address escalating security threats in Balochistan, reported 24NewsHD TV channel citing its sources.

Sources confirm that the Ministry of Interior presented the proposal during a recent federal cabinet meeting, emphasizing the need for enhanced legal measures in light of the province's security challenges.

The Ministry of Interior briefed the cabinet on the evolving security landscape in Balochistan, pointing out that insurgent and terrorist networks have become increasingly coordinated. The cabinet was informed of the recent violent incidents across the region, which have resulted in the loss of lives and damage to critical infrastructure.

Ministry sources stressed that current laws do not adequately address these integrated threats, necessitating stronger legal tools to enable a more effective response.

The approved amendments grant expanded authority to the Pakistan Army, Civil Armed Forces, and law enforcement agencies, allowing them to detain individuals suspected of terrorist activities proactively. These amendments also include changes to Section 111EEE of the Anti-Terrorism Act, which will provide security forces with legal protection for preemptive action against potential threats.

Additionally, the amendments will allow for the formation of Joint Investigation Teams (JITs) composed of intelligence and law enforcement agencies. These teams will conduct in-depth investigations and intelligence gathering on suspects who may pose a risk to national security.

The legislative process to enact these amendments will commence following the cabinet's approval, underscoring the government's commitment to restoring stability in Balochistan.
