The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice has approved the summary seeking increase in the number of Supreme Court judges to 25.
According to the committee chairman, now the Supreme Court will have 25 judges, including the chief justice of Pakistan.
JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza and PTI Senator Hamid Khan opposed the summary to increase the number of the Supreme Court judges to 25.
Committee Chairman Farooq H. Naik said that thousands of cases were pending and increase in the number of judges would help dispense timely justice to people. The committee approved the summary with a majority. Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir pondered over the Supreme Court Number Of Judges Amendment Bill 2024 and committee members expressed their opinion. Senator Qadir said that an increase in the number of Supreme Court judges was inevitable keeping in view the increase in population in the country.
Senator Shahadat Awan said that number of judges should be increased to 21 at the least. He said the new chief justice was the choice of all parties and he should be given 2-3 months. He said this entire stage was set for the new chief justice. He said that Pakistan was a poor country, but it had to spend a lot on judges.
