Fate of PTI’s three women MNAs hangs in balance

March 3, 2020 12:02 AM

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will announce its verdict on petitions seeking disqualification of three members of the National Assembly associated with the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday.

According to the cause list issued by the IHC, Justice Aamer Farooq would give his verdict on the petitions against MNAs Maleeka Bokhari, Tashfeen Safdar and Kanwal Shauzab. Tahira Bokhari and Shaista Pervaiz of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Abdullah Khan are the petitioners in these cases.

The court had reserved its judgement on these three petitions after completion of arguments from both sides on December 6. The petitioners said that Maleeka was a dual national until the last date of submission of her nomination papers, while Tashfeen concealed facts about her dual nationality from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Kanwal has been accused of lying to the Islamabad High Court about change of her vote.

All three PTI lawmakers, Maleeka, Kanwal and Tashfeen, belong to Punjab and they were selected by the party leadership for National Assembly seats reserved for women.
