Joint session of Parliament called on March 9 to elect new president

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Sunday convened a joint session of the Parliament on March 9 (Saturday) for holding the presidential election, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.


The ECP had announced to hold election for the constitutional position on March 9, voting for which will be held at the Parliament and the four provincial assemblies.


The NA speaker called the joint session of the Senate and the National Assembly under Presidential Election Rule section 9b and rules 1988.


PML-N, PPP and their allies had already nominated Asif Ali Zardari as their joint candidate in the presidential election, while Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) nominated veteran politician from Balochistan, Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) President Mahmood Khan Achakzai as their candidate. PTI founder chairman Imran Khan has endorsed Mahmood Khan Achakzai as their nominee for the coveted presidential seat.


Asif Zardari's counsel, Farooq H Naek, submitted the PPP co-chairman’s nomination papers at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Saturday noon. Nomination papers of Mahmood Khan Achakzai were also submitted in the IHC.


On March 5, candidates successfully nominated will be able to retrieve their nomination papers, and the ECP will simultaneously release the final list of presidential contenders.


The chief justices of the high courts will serve as the presiding officers for the presidential election. IHC Chief Justice Amer Farooq has assumed the role of presiding officer at the Parliament House in Islamabad for the upcoming election.
