Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb Tuesday highlighted the importance of independent media, 24NewsHD TV channel reported.
Taking to Twitter on World Press Freedom Day, she said: “Ultimate conscience of society is a responsible conscientious free press.
“The contribution of the press is transparency, accountability, and healthy discourse with high ethical standards and responsible journalism.
“It is our responsibility to stand united in condemning any abuse or intimidation in the press.”
Last month, she took over the ministry and announced that Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) was being disbanded and no ‘black law’ would be enacted or worked upon that would restrict the people's constitutional right to freedom of expression.
"The attempt to bring a black law [in the form of the PMDA] to restrict the voice of the already under-pressure media ... I announce today that the PMDA in whatever shape or form it was working till now is being disbanded."
