Hitting out at some political parties for making efforts to muster the support of members of the parliament (MPs) for the creation of a constitutional court in the country, Islamabad High Court Bar President Riasat Ali Azad said on Thursday that the court, if created, would only serve political interests of these parties, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, he said that the constitution of Pakistan was supreme. “We are fortunate to have the constitution of 1973, which is the basis of the federation and will remain so,” he said and added, “Nobody should introduce changes in it. Because if we do so, it will put the federation at risk.”

Referring to the PPP, Azad regretted it was unfortunate that the very party, which took pride in being one of the authors of the constitution was now bent upon altering it. “It was when Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the country’s prime minister that the constitution had been passed. But now his own party plans to change it.”

The Islamabad High Court Bar president said he wanted to make it clear that what these parties intended to do amounted to snatching from the people their rights.
