Pakistan’s star javelin thrower, Arshad Nadeem, has decided to opt out of the ongoing Asian Games 2023 in China. The decision comes after Nadeem complained of persistent pain in his right knee, which has been troubling him for several months.
Nadeem first revealed his discomfort during the initial training session in Hangzhou on September 27, 2023. He expressed his concerns to Dr. Asad Abbas, who was accompanying him at the time. The pain became particularly pressing in the aftermath of the World Athletics Championship, prompting Nadeem to seek a thorough evaluation.
On October 2, Nadeem again complained of knee pain and expressed a desire to undergo an evaluation to determine the impact on his ability to participate in the Javelin Throw event at the Asian Games. The Chief Medical Officer of the Pakistan Contingent recommended a comprehensive check-up.
Nadeem underwent a thorough medical examination, including a non-invasive test, i.e., MRI, at a local hospital in Hangzhou. The MRI revealed a chronic injury that Nadeem had been carrying for some time.
After consulting with medical personnel, Nadeem decided not to participate in the Asian Games to prevent any untoward situation that may hinder his training program and participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
This decision is a significant development, especially considering Nadeem’s rivalry with India’s Neeraj Chopra. Both athletes have been seen as the top contenders in the javelin throw event, and Nadeem’s withdrawal could impact the dynamics of the competition.
Despite this setback, Nadeem remains hopeful for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. His focus now shifts towards recovery and preparation for the upcoming mega sports event. It is crucial for Nadeem to maintain his fitness levels and manage his injury effectively to ensure his participation in the Paris Olympics.
