Elections 2024 sees high rejection rate of nomination papers

A total of 25,951 candidates submitted their nomination papers for the national assembly and the four provincial assemblies of the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Sunday.


According to sources within the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), among the staggering number of nominations, 22,855 papers were approved, while 3,096 faced rejection by the Returning Officers.


Analysis indicated that a significant number of nomination papers faced rejection in 2024, surpassing the count from the previous election held in 2018.


About 13.70% of the nomination papers submitted by National Assembly candidates in 2024 were rejected, marking a notable increase from the 10.4% rejection rate recorded in 2018.


 Election tribunals across the country accepted the appeals of 68.56 percent of the national assembly candidates and rejected the appeals of 31.43 percent.  


Similarly, appeals from candidates of the four provincial assemblies were also scrutinized by the tribunals, with 66.66% of appeals approved and 33.33% rejected.


A vast majority, accounting for 88.06%, of the nomination papers submitted for both National and Provincial Assemblies gained approval. However, 11.93% of the nomination papers were deemed unfit for candidacy.


Returning Officers played a pivotal role in the nomination process.


They approved 86.29% of the National Assembly nomination papers and 88.78% of the papers for the four provincial assemblies. Conversely, 11.21% of the provincial assembly nomination papers faced rejection.


 For the National Assembly, 7,474 applications were submitted for 266 general seats, encompassing 7,029 men and 445 women.


Out of these, 6,450 candidates received approval while 1,024 faced rejection.


Appeals against nomination paper rejections flooded the tribunals, with 897 appeals filed for the National Assembly and 1,476 for provincial assemblies.


 Across the nation, 615 petitions for the National Assembly were granted, whereas 282 were rejected.


For the provincial assemblies, 18,477 nomination papers were submitted for 593 general seats.


Of these, 16,405 received approval, while 2,072 were rejected. A total of 1,476 appeals were filed, with 984 granted and 492 rejected by the tribunals.


The extensive process saw 2,373 appeals filed by candidates of national and provincial assemblies, with 1,599 petitions allowed and 774 rejected by the tribunals.
