Meta Platforms would end its widespread prohibition on the word shaheed following a year-long assessment by its oversight board, which concluded that the social media company's approach was excessive.
Criticism of the company's handling of Middle East-related content has been ongoing for years, including a 2021 study commissioned by Meta itself which found that its approach had a negative impact on human rights for Palestinians and other Arabic-speaking users.
These criticisms have intensified since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in October.
The oversight board, which operates independently despite being funded by Meta, initiated its review last year due to the fact that the word "Palestine" led to more content removals on Meta's platforms than any other word or phrase. Meta is the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.
