The National Institute of Health (NIH) Tuesday issued an advisory to relevant health authorities to enhance prevention and timely control of cholera in Pakistan.

Cholera, an intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae, remains a significant health concern in Pakistan, similar to other Asian countries.

The advisory highlights the ongoing reporting of cholera cases from various parts of the country and raises concerns about a potential increase in cases during the summer and rainy seasons.

The advisory underscores that poor hygiene practices and a lack of access to clean drinking water create favourable conditions for cholera outbreaks. It urges concerned authorities to be vigilant and implement cholera prevention measures promptly.

Key recommendations for the public include frequent hand washing with soap and water, especially after using the toilet, changing diapers, and before preparing food or eating. Additionally, citizens are advised to ensure they drink clean, safe water to prevent cholera infection.

The advisory aims to mitigate the spread of cholera by promoting awareness and proactive health practices among the population and health authorities.
