The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan against the acquittal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a money laundering case, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Saturday. 

The petition was filed by PTI leader Azam Swati requesting the court to order the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to file an appeal against the acquittal of Shehbaz Sharif. 

The petition further contended that the Supreme Court last year took a suo motu note on the replacement of prosecutors in high-profile cases. 

The application said that the accused was acquitted in the high-profile case due to botched prosecution. 

Azam Swati held in the petition that the accused was freed due to the alleged collusion of the accused and the investigating agencies. 

“FIA neither opposed Shahbaz Sharif's acquittal nor filed an appeal in the court.” 

It is prayed in the petition that the apex court should order the FIA to perform its duty as per law.  

A court acquitted Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and his son of corruption and money laundering charges in October 2022. They were accused of laundering millions of dollars in rupees. The FIA Lahore filed corruption and money laundering charges against Sharif and his two sons, Hamza and Suleman, in November 2020, accusing them of laundering 16.3 billion rupees (nearly $200m) through 28 bank accounts, which had no names for the account holders, between 2008 and 2018.
