Punjab Chief Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi visited different areas of Lahore and reviewed the drainage issues in the city.
According to the 24News HD TV channel, CM Naqvi visited the areas of Lakshmi Chowk, Railway Station, Karishan Nagar (Islampura), Urdu Bazar, and Circular Road.
During his visit to different areas, the CM reviewed the rainwater situation at Lakshmi Chowk, Railway Station, and Circular Road and appreciated the performance of the administration on the completion of drainage work at Lakshmi Chowk.
CM Mohsin Naqvi visited Urdu Bazaar and Islampura and directed the concerned authorities to drainage of water through machinery in both areas to make the life and business of people easy.
Mohsin Naqvi also made a detailed conversation with the shopkeepers and residents in Islampura and assured them to complete the drainage work soon.
In Islampura, the citizens complained to the Punjab Chief Minister about the slowness in the drainage work in their area.
Talking to newsmen while visiting different areas of Lahore, Punjab Chief Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi confirmed that seven people died in rain-related incidents in the city. “Three died due to electrocution, two in roof collapse and a little girl drowned in rainwater,” he added.
The CM Punjab further said their top mission is the water draining before the next rain spell hit the city.
Heavy rain and strong winds lashed upper parts of Punjab including Lahore early Wednesday morning claiming several lives, and disrupting routine life and electricity supply.
At least seven people were killed in Lahore in rain-related incidents in the city and remote areas.
Data shared by Met Office showed several parts of Lahore received up to 179mm of rain. According to Met Department stats, the highest rain was recorded at the Nishtar Town Director Office (118mm), Jail Road (56.5mm), at Airport 52mm, Head Office WASA, Gulberg 63mm, Gulshan-e-Ravi 79mm, Iqbal Town 69mm, Tajpura 79mm, Johar Town 82mm, Mughalpura 88mm, Chowk Nakhuda 54mm, Samanabad 54mm and Upper Mall 88mm.
Following the rain, the power supply to different parts of Lahore was disrupted as 200 feeders of the LESCO tripped.
History of Rains in Lahore
Never ever in the last 30 years, the city received as much rain, and that, too, in a short span of time on Wednesday.
-Lahore received 291 millimetres of rain in 10 hours on July 5, 2023 (Wednesday) which broke a 30-year-old record.
-So intense was the downpour that over 200 millimetres of rain was recorded at over dozen places in the Punjab capital.
-Around nine days back, on June 26, the city received 256 millimetres of rain.
-Last year, in 2022, the highest amount of rainfall recorded in the city in just a few hours was 238 millimetres.
-And four years back in 2018, Lahore received 288 millimetres of rain.
Never ever in the last 30 years, the city received as much rain, and that, too, in a short span of time.
