Punjab Police say can’t provide ample security for elections

March 6, 2023 10:33 PM

Punjab Police Monday said that they are not able to provide security for elections as per Election Commission requirements, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Punjab police stated that there are around 52200 polling stations across Punjab and the provision of security as per Election Commission requirements is impossible. It was stated that the ECP has divided all the stations into three categories A, B and C and requires 11, eight and five security workers respectively. According to this formula, more than 420000 workers will be required while Punjab Police has merely 180000 men including the Ministerial staff.

It was also stated that there are more than 1200 police stations and offices and thousands of sensitive places where the policemen are at guard 24 hours of the day. More than 30000 policemen are assigned for the security of foreigners. Emptying all the police stations and Punjab Constabulary while using all the available resources, only one hundred thousand policemen can be provided which is even lesser than 25% of the requirements of ECP. Therefore, ECP should demand the federation for three hundred thousand workers for the conduction of transparent and just elections.

The IG office has sent a detailed response regarding the security plan of the Provincial Election Commission elections.
