Wheat crisis looms in Punjab

The wheat crisis has been looming as recent floods inflicted big damage to the crops and and the godowns, 24NewsHD TV channel reported Monday. 

Three and a half lakh tonnes of wheat was wasted in Rajanpur and Fazilpur godowns, sources in the Punjab Food Department said. 

A request has been made to the federal government to seek permission for importing one million tonnes of wheat

The official quota in Punjab is 16,700 tonnes per day, the sources, adding that the provincial need is 25,000 tonnes of wheat, they said. The insider raised fear of famine in December

 The price of 10 kg is Rs 490 and The price of a twenty kg bag of government wheat is Rs 890 while the government wheat is unavailable in most of the stores

Chairman of Flour Mills Association Asim Raza said that the mills were doing their job. But, he too set alarm bells ringing, saying that the situation is worsening and the government should take immediate steps to cope with the emerging challenge.
