Opposition sticks to guns: Fazl vows to protect democracy at all costs

Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI) chief Fazlur Rehman has said the union of opposition parties will continue protecting democratic rights,  24NewsHD TV channel reported.

The joint opposition sticks to its guns, he said while addressing a press conference after a meeting of opp leaders in the federal capital.

Flanked by PML-M President Shehbaz Sharif and other leaders, Fazl said the joint opposition termed the rejection of the no-confidence motion by Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri and Imran Khan's government in the National Assembly unconstitutional.

This is an attack on the constitution and parliament, he said, adding that the constitution guarantees the rights of 220 million people.

“The united opposition reiterates the resolve to continue safeguarding the parliamentary system and the constitution. Any unconstitutional ruling is an attack on the foundation that cannot be tolerated."

It is part of a conspiracy to impose a presidential system and dictatorship on the country, he said raising the demand for an immediate repeal of this unconstitutional measure.

Those responsible for attacking the constitution should be identified and given exemplary punishment, he demanded, adding that the National Security Council is required to inform the nation.

The JUI chief said the united opposition condemned the unconstitutional behavior of the speaker in the Punjab Assembly as this is a very dangerous move for the federation of Pakistan. He announced on Friday, April 8, Day to Defend Constitution and Thanksgiving Day will be observed across the country

He made a request the religious leaders to make announcements and create awareness among the people about their rights.

He also said the opposition will approach the court of people to defend the constitution and the democratic system in the country.

Earlier, the opposition leaders mulled over measures to cope with the political challenges in wake of the dissolution of NA.
