Umar Tanveer Butt, a former member of the provincial assembly from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), announced his resignation from politics and the party in a video message on Saturday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
He said he joined PTI in 2007 with the aim of bringing a new system within the country, but was disillusioned by the anti-military narrative of the party leadership.
Butt said he was already concerned about the anti-Pakistani narrative of PTI, but the incident of May 9, when PTI workers clashed with security forces outside the Election Commission, was a dark day that attempted to create a rift between people and institutions.
He accused some PTI ministers, such as Hamad Azhar, Shireen Mazari and Murad Saeed, of nurturing this narrative.
"I can no longer bear the burden of anti-state narrative. I have decided to quit politics and PTI. I have no affiliation with any political party now," Butt said in the video he released after granting bail in May 9 violence related cases.
Butt, who founded the Insaf Lawyers Forum (ILF) in Rawalpindi, was arrested by City Police on December 14 on charges of inciting violence and attacking police during the May 9 protest. He was granted bail by the Anti-Terrorism Court on Friday.
