In a bizarre turn of incidents, Sri Lanka's seasoned all-rounder Angelo Mathews had to walk back to the pavilion after Bangladesh skipper Shakib al Hasan appealed for a timed-out during the ICC ODI World Cup match in New Delhi on Monday.

Angelo Mathews has been timed out and it is the first-ever timed-out dismissal in international cricket (men/women). Although it has happened six times before in any format, but it was all in first-class cricket.

Mathews pleaded his case, saying the strap of his helmet wasn't working and that's why he needed the extra time. Someone had brought him a replacement, but it didn't happen quickly enough.

The laws state a new batter needs to be ready to face their first ball within three minutes of arriving. Mathews wasn't.

For clarity, Mathews had walked into the field within those three minutes, but as he was walking in, he found the strap of his helment wasn't working properly so he asked for a new one and that was the reason for the delay.

Bangladesh appealed. Mathews tried to talk to Shakib who responded pleasantly enough but did not withdraw the appeal. The decision's made now. But Sri Lankans were not happy. Mathews threw his helmet away in disappointment as he walked back.

Captain Mendis was seen talking to the Bangladesh coach and former SL player Chandika Hathurusinghe about it.

Waqar Younis from the commentary box says "this is not good for the game. It is against the spirit of cricket".
