The government has decided to provide relief to electricity consumers by refunding the extra charges collected for overbilling in the current month's bills.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, under the pro-rata system, the federal government has ordered the application of a lower tariff on the additional units billed.

As per the decision, a reduced tariff will be applied to additional units for pro-rata billing, where the protected category consumers will be charged 13 rupees per unit instead of 27 rupees per unit.

Consumers will receive a credit for the extra amount charged in the current month's bills, and the excess amount collected will be refunded.

Moreover, NEPRA has waived the penalties on bills paid after the due date.

Last month, additional units were charged to consumers through the pro-rata system, prompting an investigation by NAB and FIA.

The investigative teams highlighted the absence of the reading dates on the bills, and LESCO could not provide a satisfactory explanation for this omission.
