Top seed Malaysian Ivan Yuen Saturday became the crowned champion of the 14th Chief of the Naval Staff International Squash Championship-2020 as he beat second seed Tayyab Aslam 3-1 in the final played at Pakistan Navy Roshan Khan Jahangir Khan Squash Complex, Karachi on Saturday.
Tayyab started the first game on a very high note and took the game 11-7. But after playing so well, Tayyab lost momentum and allowed too much room to Ivan, who won the second game 11-4, third game 11-4 and after initial resistance from Tayyab in the 4th game, Ivan took the game 11-7, winning the title in 47 minutes of top class squash.
A total of 15 players from Egypt, France, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Malaysia and 10 local players demonstrated their skills in weeklong event. Commander Pakistan Fleet, Vice Admiral Asif Khaliq graced the closing ceremony as chief guest.
Earlier, addressing the ceremony Tournament Director Commodore Habib Ur Rehman appraised the audience about Pakistan Navy’s long association with the squash. He said that squash championship is being conducted since two decades to keep the PN legacy alive that shows commitment for promotion of games in general and squash in particular.
The Tournament Director also expressed his gratitude for the chief guest, Professional Squash Association, Pakistan Squash Federation and all sponsors & participants.
Later, Chief Guest Commander Pakistan Fleet, Vice Admiral Asif Khaliq gave away the prizes to winner & runners-up and also congratulated them for their hard work and valued achievement.
Ivan received glittering trophy and $3610 as winner’s bonus while Tayyab received shield and $2280 runners-up prize money. The closing ceremony was attended by a large number of civil & military dignitaries, sponsors and senior players’ of sports community.
