The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday directed the Ministry of Human Rights to submit to it a report on the treatment of prisoners in jails in one month’s time so that those responsible for that could be identified, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
During the hearing of a petition filed against the violations of rights of jail inmates, Chief Justice (CJ) of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Justice Athar Minallah said a state could not commit excesses against its own people. “And if the citizens are facing persecution, then somebody is to be held accountable for that. Apparently, the concerned province’s chief minister and the country’s prime minister are responsible for their rights’ violations,” the CJ said, adding, “Why not these people are monetarily compensated for the mental and physical torture they are made to bear in prisons, and why not those responsible for their plight are made to pay for that.”
Justice Minallah remarked that the court had given an order in this connection a year ago.
