The government on Saturday filed review petition in the Supreme Court against its verdict that declared the National Assembly deputy speaker’s ruling regarding dismissal of opposition’s no-confidence motion and subsequent dissolution of National Assembly by President Arif Alvi on the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan unconstitutional and illegal, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The government went into appeal and submitted a review petition to the apex court pleading it to revisit its verdict delivered by a 5-judge larger bench on April 7, 2022 in which it nullified the deputy speaker’s ruling pronouncing it unconstitutional and restored assembly while asking the speaker to conduct voting on opposition’s no-trust motion.
The review petition was filed by Dr Babar Awan and Muhammad Azhar Advocate.
Earlier, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri has said that he will go to the Supreme Court pleading it to review its verdict while claiming that his ruling was not unconstitutional.
The Supreme Court in its landmark verdict on April 7 declared NA Deputy Speaker Suri’s dismissal of opposition’s no-confidence motion under Article 5 illegal and unconstitutional. But Suri contested that his ruling was as per the law and constitution.
While talking to 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday in the parliament lobby, the NA deputy speaker said that what he did on April 3, was absolutely correct. He said that he had exposed an international conspiracy.
He said that he would go into appeal and would plead the Supreme Court to revisit its decision as his ruling was not unconstitutional.
On the other hand, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that there was clear time limit in Article 95 for the no-trust motion. Now the voting on no-confidence resolution will be unconstitutional as it has exceeded time limit, Fawad said adding that anyways the decision regarding voting would be taken by the speaker.
Earlier, the PTI minister was seen having a very cordial conversation with PML-N leader Khwaja Saad Rafique in the parliament lobby.
Talking to journalists, Fawad said he had personal friendship with many opposition leaders.
