UN Security Council, US condemn Karachi terror attack

The UN Security Council and the United States have condemned the terrorist attack in Pakistani city of Karachi in which three people including two Chinese engineers were killed, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.


The UN Security Council issued a press statement on Tuesday strongly condemning the terrorist attack in Karachi on Sunday night.


The members of the Security Council "condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack near Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, Pakistan", the statement said.


They expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and the governments of China and Pakistan, and wished a speedy and full recovery to those injured, it added.


The council members reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, underlining the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.


They urged all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the governments of China and Pakistan, as well as all other relevant authorities in this regard.


"The members of the Security Council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," the statement said, stressing the need for all states to combat by all means, in accordance with the UN Charter and other obligations under international law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.


US condemns Karachi terror attack


Responding to a question at regular news briefing, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Millar said the US government is saddened over loss of life and injured victims in the Karachi terror attack.


He extended heartfelt condolences to those impacted by the blast.
Responding to a question about weekend violent protests called by Tehrik-e-Insaaf in Islamabad, he said in Pakistan, as around the world, the United States supports freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.

He said the United States also called on protesters to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from violence.
