‘75pc of population lacks essential nutrients’

More than two-thirds of the global population is not getting enough of essential vitamins and minerals in their diet.


A Harvard study analyzed dietary data from 185 countries and found that over 5 billion people don’t get enough iodine, calcium, or vitamin E.


In addition, the study pointed out that nearly 5 million people are deficient in iron, which is alarming as it’s the most common cause of anaemia.


The study also revealed that women on average had lower intakes of iodine, vitamin B12, and iron than men. Men were more likely to consume lower levels of magnesium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A, thiamin, and vitamin B6.


These deficiencies can lead to several health problems. For example, iodine is vital for brain development and thyroid function. Vitamin E is crucial for protecting cells from damage, whereas iron is essential for haemoglobin production, the protein that carries oxygen in the body.
