In a bizarre turn of events in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh, a woman reportedly eloped with her daughter’s fiancé just days before the wedding. Along with fleeing, the pair allegedly took cash and jewellery worth several lakhs that were meant for the wedding.
The bride-to-be’s father, Jitendra Kumar, filed a police complaint after discovering that his wife and the groom had vanished, along with ₹3.5 lakh in cash and gold and silver jewellery valued at approximately ₹5 lakh.
"My daughter's wedding was set for April 16. Invitations had been sent out and preparations were underway," Jitendra said. "But the groom hardly interacted with my daughter and instead spent nearly 20–22 hours a day talking to my wife. I work in Bengaluru and had only recently returned to the village. When I saw how close they were, I became suspicious.”
He also recounted a confrontation with the groom, who allegedly told him, "You’ve troubled her for 20 years. Let her live now. Forget her."
The bride, Shivani, expressed her anger and disbelief: "My mother ran away with the jewellery and money. She did everything that man told her to. He completely manipulated her. I just want our things back. Whether they live or die doesn't matter to us anymore."
Police have registered a missing persons report and launched an investigation to locate the woman.
