Association shows concern over registration of ‘sedition’ cases against journalists

The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) on Friday demanded the government not only to fulfill its promise to revoke the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) but also take all the stakeholders on board before introducing any changes to the media laws, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The demands were made at the meeting of AEMEND’s executive committee held in Lahore, with Association President Azhar Abbas in the chair.

The meeting also showed concern over the registration of cases of sedition against some journalists and vindictive policies being pursued against them.

The participants also showed concern over the issuance of notices by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to some TV channels, and decided to take the Authority to courts. 

It was also decided that a delegation of the Association would meet with the PEMRA officials.

Apart from that, the meeting decided to organise courses for the training of producers and reporters so that they could abide by the code of conduct.

It was also decided that organise an international seminar in Islamabad in connection with ‘Freedom of Press’ day.

The participants praised the passage of Journalist Protection Bill by Sindh Assembly, and urged the other three provinces to do the same.

AEMEND also demanded increasing the salaries of journalists in the wake of unprecedented inflation in the country.
