The Supreme Court Friday rejected the request made by the Punjab government for withdrawing the case of the Sharif family’s sugar mills, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan heard the petition against the transfer of the Sharif family’s sugar mills to cotton areas in the Punjab province.

The court expressed its displeasure over the Punjab government’s appeal to take back the case against the Sharif mills.

Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi asked about the reason why the Punjab government was so keen to not follow the case.

A representative of the Punjab Industries and Commerce Department contended that the matter of sugar mills had been resolved. “Mills have been allowed to start the operation.”

The court replied the case was still in court so how the issue could be resolved?

Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi said, "What do you mean, why do you want to withdraw the case?" If the case is in court, how was the problem resolved?

Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan said that the Punjab government should file its request according to the procedure and the court would review the case again.

Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar said whether the courts are run by the Punjab government. How can the Punjab government write a letter and withdraw the pending case?  The court adjourned the case hearing till February 28.
