Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif restored the laptop scheme for students after seven years in a meeting regarding higher education sector reforms, 24News HD TV Channel reported on Friday.
According to the details, the Punjab CM was briefed about the higher education issues and agreed to build new universities and colleges on a priority basis in backward districts of the province.
In the meeting, CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif said international standard universities in every district and colleges at the tehsil level were among her government's goals.
She welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's declaration of an "Educational Emergency" countrywide and said the education at schools and higher institutes needed a complete revamp.
She further stated that the Punjab government was going to invest in the development of the knowledge economy and IT education.
On this occasion, CM Maryam Nawaz also announced that her government will give 20,000 motorbikes to students across the province of Punjab.
In the meeting, a detailed briefing was given to the CM on the promotion of higher education, laptops and transport facilities to the students.
She was briefed that the higher education budget remained high during the former tenures of the Pakistan Muslim League-N.
She was briefed that more than 6,50,000 students are studying in private and public universities in Punjab.
Among the students studying in universities, the proportion of boys is 44 per cent and the proportion of girls is 56 per cent.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, Information Minister Uzma Zahid Bukhari, Chief Secretary, Secretary Higher Education and other officials attended the meeting.
