Child labour has become a major issue in Pakistan. Many children are forced to work instead of going to school, which takes away their right to education and a better future. Despite laws against child labour, about 3.3 million children in Pakistan are working in difficult and unsafe conditions. This issue needs urgent action.
Islam strictly forbids the exploitation of children and teaches fairness and kindness. The Holy Quran states,
“Do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Surely, the killing of them is a great sin.” (Surah Al-Isra 17:31).
This reminds us that it is the duty of society and the government to take care of children rather than forcing them into labour due to poverty. One of the main reasons for child labour is poverty. Many poor families send their children to work because they cannot afford basic education. This keeps them trapped in a cycle of poverty.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” (Ibn Majah).
Every child deserves a proper education, but child labour takes that right away. To solve this problem, the government must introduce better policies. In countries like Germany, the government helps parents by giving financial support for their children’s education and well-being.
Pakistan should do the same by providing financial aid to struggling families. More public schools with quality education should be built so that children can study for free. Additionally, the government should create more job opportunities for parents to reduce their need to send children to work.
A sustainable and effective Child Protection Services system should also be put in place. Government officers should regularly check on children to ensure they are not being forced into labour. A foster care system could also be introduced, where families willing to care for these children receive financial support to cover their needs.
The Prophet (PBUH) said, “The best house among Muslims is the one where an orphan is well treated.” (Ibn Majah).
It is our responsibility to protect and support children instead of exploiting them. The government must take action now to end child labour, protect children’s rights, and provide education for all. Only then can Pakistan build a better and brighter future.
