Apple is preparing to equip its high-end Apple Watch Ultra with satellite connectivity, enabling users to send off-grid messages, according to Bloomberg.

The feature, which could debut with the next Ultra model expected in late 2025, aims to enhance the smartwatch’s appeal for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The capability would leverage Globalstar’s satellite fleet, extending the technology first introduced on the iPhone 14 in 2022. Initially designed for emergency communication when Wi-Fi or cellular networks are unavailable, the functionality was expanded in 2023 to include iMessage support for satellite-based messaging.

Marketed as the "ultimate sports and adventure watch," the Apple Watch Ultra could become the first mainstream smartwatch to offer satellite connectivity, a potential game-changer for outdoor activities like hiking and remote exploration.

Apple’s ongoing partnership with Globalstar underscores the company's commitment to satellite technology. In November, Apple invested $1.5 billion in the satellite operator, securing a 20% stake to support its connectivity ambitions.

Bloomberg also noted Apple is developing a blood-pressure monitoring feature for its watches, though it is unclear if the feature will be ready for the 2025 Ultra lineup.

The next-generation Apple Watch Ultra’s satellite capability could further solidify Apple’s position at the forefront of wearable technology, appealing to a niche but growing audience seeking cutting-edge connectivity features.
