Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Wednesday that former spymaster General (r) Faiz Hameed had played a major role in the ascent of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan to power, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Talking to newsmen at the Parliament House, Asif said for five to six years, both Faiz and Imran were the partners in what he called a ‘crime’. “Their partnership dates back to the 2018 general elections era,” he added.

He alleged that not only the two had masterminded the May 9 riots, but they also collaborated with each other for the incidents that followed May 9. “The government has the evidence to prove its claim and satisfy those who doubt the connection between the two.”

The proof, the minister went on to say, would show how Imran was brought to power by providing every help to his party.

He alleged that the former spymaster was also responsible for jailing the former prime minister’s opponents, implicating them and their families in cases and facilitating Imran and his wife Bushra Bibi commit corruption.

Asif said the courts would decide whether PTI founder would be tried in a military court. “However, no one can deny the fact that several people were court-martialled when Imran was the prime minister.”

When a reporter asked him whether the ongoing investigations would also have implications for the ex-army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the minister replied certainly the former army chief’s name could also surface during questioning from Faiz.

He said he was not aware whether the PTI founder was still receiving support from people within the establishment.

Asif said that yesterday, the PTI MNAs did not present any proof in the National Assembly to substantiate their claim of deaths of the party workers at the hands of security forces at D-Chowk, Islamabad.
