The constitutional bench (CB) of the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday disposed of three petitions filed against rigging in the February 8, 2024 general elections due to their non-perusal, besides adjourning the hearing of an identical petition filed by former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan until after the winter vacations, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
A seven-member of the CB, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard the petitions.
Qayyum Khan, Mehmood Akhtar and Mian Akhtar, the petitioners, did not turn up in the court, while in the case of the PTI founder’s petition, the bench put off the hearing when his counsel Hamid Khan requested for the adjournment, saying he could not prepare for the case since he did not receive the notice.
Also on Wednesday, the constitutional bench disposed of the miscellaneous plea filed in the case of electronic voting system, saying it had become ineffective.
The Law Commission DG told the bench that in the light of the court order, the system had been employed in the by-elections held in 2018 following which a report had been submitted to the parliament. “Now it is the parliament, which has to look into the matter,” he added.
Addressing Hamid Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel advised him to take up the matter in the Senate’s parliamentary committee. “Instead of looking up to the apex court, go to parliament instead.”
The judge went on to say that when the case was over, how the bench could hear a miscellaneous plea.
