The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has taken the initiative to introduce major changes in its standard operating procedures (SOPs) concerning parliamentarians' arrest and interrogation.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, under these revised procedures, in case of any complaints against a member of the parliament, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairman of the Senate will be notified.
Furthermore, members of parliament will not be detained during the inquiry process as mere allegations will not suffice for the arrest of the parliamentarians.
The sources said the violation of these SOPs by officials could result in imprisonment of up to one year and a fine of Rs one million.
The sources said NAB has sought assistance from the Speaker of the National Assembly to formalize these new SOPs into law.
It is worth mentioning here that the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on April 24, 2024, that to implement its manifesto, the PML-N-led Shehbaz Sharif government has expedited its work to abolish the NAB.
The channel reported that the PML-N government sought advice from the ministries and divisions concerned on mechanism and legislation required to shut down the NAB office, established by a dictator to pressure politicians.
Moreover, the PML-N government has constituted various teams to implement its manifesto in letter and spirit.
