16,523 Pakistani males change gender, 12,154 women become men

The Interior Ministry Thursday revealed that as many as 28,723 people have undergone gender reassignment in Pakistan in the last three years.
According to the 24News HD TV channel, this was disclosed by the interior ministry in the Senate during the Question Hour.
According to the written reply of the ministry, 16,523 men in the country have changed their gender and turned into women.
On the other hand, 12,154 women became men after gender reassignment.
According to the details provided to the Senate, nine men converted themselves into transgender (eunuchs) while there were 21-transgender who became men through a medical procedure.
In the last three years, more than 28,700 citizens have applied to NADRA to change their data and change their gender in the record.
In a written reply to the question of Senator Mushtaq Ahmed, the Senate was informed that between July 2018 and June this year, 12,154 women have applied for registration of their gender as men.
Senator Mushtaq had asked how many citizens had applied for a gender reassignment certificate from NADRA in the last three years.
NADRA in a reply said that it did not issue a gender reassignment certificate however gender was changed in the record due to medical reasons and eunuchs were registered as male or female. NADRA said that it had handled 28,723 such cases in the last three years.
