The presence of Poliovirus in the sewage water of Karachi rang the alarm bells once again as it has been affirmed first time this year, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.
According to Pakistan's National Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health, the Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1) was found in an environmental sample taken from a sewage pipe in the Landhi region of Karachi last month.
There have been up to 11 confirmed cases of the poliovirus in Pakistan so far this month already, bringing the year's total number of cases to 22. Five of the 11 cases found in August were from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, five from Punjab, and one from Sindh.
Samples are collected from sewage every month in Karachi to test for poliovirus. The experts collected samples from Malir, Korangi, Landhi, Baldia, Sohrab Goth and rural areas of the city.
