In September, opposition parties formally formed an alliance with the name of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to launch a three-phased campaign to topple the government of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan.
The alliance planned countrywide public meetings protest demonstrations and rallies in December and a long march to Islamabad in January 2021.
The plan would be executed after December 13 rally at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore. The opposition alliance decided to move forward with the Lahore rally though the government raised concerns about the risk of Covid-19 and warning of legal action.
