Punjab govt bans slaughter of female cattle to enhance livestock exports

After focusing on the development of the agriculture sector, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Syed Mohsin Naqvi has now turned his attention to the livestock sector, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.


On his special instructions, the Livestock Department, Punjab has banned the slaughter of female cattle which could be of utility in all districts of the province.


Separately, at a meeting, chaired by the CM on Tuesday, it was decided to impose an emergency for enhancing productivity of the livestock sector.


Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that special zones would be set up in Punjab to keep animals safe from diseases.


He also constituted a committee, comprising provincial minister for livestock, additional chief secretary, secretary livestock, secretary finance, All Pakistan Meat Exporters’ Association president, commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan and commissioner Bahawalpur, and tasked them with drawing up a plan for increasing output of the sector within four days.


The CM told them that the plan should be brief, to the point and comprehensive.


He said there was a lot of room for exporting livestock products to countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.   


“We have to make a plan immediately so that we could increase our exports to the Gulf countries,” he said, adding, “This is high time that we took steps for enhancing our exports without wasting a single minute.”


Punjab Minister for Livestock Ibrahim Hassan Murad attended the meeting from Beijing via a video link.


Additional chief secretary, secretaries planning & development, livestock, local government, finance, forests, All Pakistan Meat Exporters’ and Processors Association president and the general secretary were in attendance. 


Commissioner Bahawalpur and Commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan attended the meeting via a video link.
