Record rain in Lahore breaks 30-year-old record

Amid a monsoon spell across Punjab, the provincial capital Lahore received a record 315 millimetres (mm) of rain on Friday, breaking a 30-year-old record and leaving the city inundated, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed confirmed that the fresh spell had broken a 30-year-old record as the City’s Tajpura area received 315mm of rain.

He said last year, 291mm of rain was recorded at the city’s Lakshmi Chowk, which received 170mm rain this year.

WASA officials confirmed that the neighbourhoods of Pani Wala Talab received 151mm rain, Qurtuba Chowk 152mm, Gulshan-e-Ravi 151mm, Mughalpura 145mm, Airport 86mm, Upper Mall 130mm, Samanabad 153mm, Iqbal Town 152mm, Gulberg Town 105mm, Chowk Nakhuda 155mm, Nishter Town 162mm, Jail Road 69mm and Farrukhabad 140 mm.

"The rainwater has been removed from Lakshmi Chowk and other areas are also being cleared. Soon the city will be cleared of rainwater," said the WASA MD.

He said the WASA teams were active in the field and continuously monitoring the situation.
