Pakistan experienced the deadliest 24 hours (Thursday) since the outbreak of the pandemic as 107 died of the coronavirus, raising the death toll to 2,463.
But it was the worst day in terms of new reported cases as well as another 6,397 people were tested positive for the coronavirus after which the overall number rose to 125,933.
More than 100 deaths in 24 hours are now recorded thrice in the country and that too in the current week. It was 105 on Monday, 101 on Wednesday and 107 on Thursday.
The John Hopkins University has already listed Pakistan among the top six countries where the virus is spreading at an alarming rate. Pakistan, placed sixth in the list, is led by Brazil, Mexico, India, Russia and Chile.
The data released by National Command and Control Centre on Friday morning shows that most these latest deaths were reported from Punjab where 49 people died of the virus. It means a total of 890 people have lost their lives in the province so far.
On the other hand, the overall deaths recorded in Sindh rose to 776 as a result of another 38 Covid-19 patients dying during the past 24 hours.
The death toll details for the other regions are: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 632, Balochistan 75, Islamabad 65, Gilgit-Baltistan 15 and Azad Kashmir 10.
As far as the new reported cases are concerned, another 3,038 people were diagnosed with the virus in Sindh during the 24-hour period, raising the overall number of patients in the province to 46,828.
However, Punjab unfortunately continues to lead on this count too where the virus has so far been found in a total of 47,382 people. The region-wise details for the rest of the country are: 15,787 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 7,673 in Balochistan, 6,699 in Islamabad, 1,030 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 534 in Azad Kashmir.
However, Thursday also saw some progress too as the highest number of tests in a single day were conducted. With addition of 28,344 tests, the total figures since the outbreak of the pandemic reached 809,169.
On the other hand, a total of 5,650 patients are under treatment at 818 hospitals in different parts of the country.
Currently, there are 83,223 active cases in the country while remaining ones are closed – 40,247 fully recovered and 2,463 died.
