A 10-year-old girl was killed while seven others were injured when the roof of a house caved in in Sheikhupura due to rain late Saturday night, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.
Rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, lashed Lahore, and other parts of Punjab, including Khushab, Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and other parts of the country.
Rain turns weather pleasant in Lahore and suburbs
Rain and cool breeze, blowing at the speed of five kilometers per hour, turned the weather pleasant in the Punjab capital.
Minimum temperature in the city was recorded at 23 degrees Celsius, which was expected to go up to 33 degrees Celsius later in the afternoon, while the humidity level in the air was 77 per cent.
The Met Office forecast strong winds and rain for upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Islamabad, AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and different parts of Punjab during the next 24 hours.
Turbat in Balochistan was the hottest place in the country on Saturday where the maximum temperature shot up to 44 degrees Celsius.
It was 41 degrees Celsius in Sukkur and Dera Ghazi Khan, 39 degrees Celsius in Hyderabad and Multan, 37 degrees Celsius in Peshawar, 36 degrees Celsius in Lahore and Muzaffarabad, 35 degrees Celsius in Karachi and Islamabad, 31 degrees Celsius in GB and 29 degrees Celsius in Quetta.
PDMA releases report on losses from rains in Punjab
On the other hand, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in its report has said that two people have lost their lives while 26 have been injured in rain-related incidents reported from different districts and divisions of Punjab namely Sheikhupura, Sargodha, Kasur, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Chiniot since May 9.
“Four-year-old Hina died when the roof of her house caved in at Chiniot, while a 10-year-old girl lost her life also in an incident of roof collapse in Sheikhupura,” it has said, adding, “Four males, nine females and 13 children received injuries.”
The Authority has said that 11 houses have been affected while nine incidents of roof collapse have been reported during the period under review.
On the other hand, PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia has ordered the provision of best medical treatment to those injured. “On the instructions of the Punjab chief minister, the administration is on a high alert,” he has said, adding, “The situation is being monitored from the PDMA’s control room round the clock.”
Kathia has advised people to take precautionary measures in view of bad weather. “Stay at safe places during rainstorms, especially when there is thunder and lightning,” he has advised.
The PDMA DG has asked people to dial the helpline number 1129 in case of an emergency.
