At least two workers were killed and 35 injured in a chemical leak at a Texas oil refinery owned by Mexico's state-owned oil company Pemex, the company said Friday.
"Unfortunately we have two dead, two workers who were in the affected area and who were directly impacted by the gas" leak Thursday at the refinery in Deer Park, Pemex director Victor Rodriguez Padilla said.
Thirty-five others needed medical treatment, of whom 13 were still in hospital for observation, he said, adding that all the workers were US employees of maintenance sub-contractors.
An investigation into the cause of the leak was underway, Padilla added.
Operations at the refinery, which processes nearly 300,000 barrels of oil per day, were reduced to a minimum after the leak.
Pemex has suffered a series of fires and other safety incidents in recent years.
In April, a fire on a platform off the coast of southeast Mexico left one worker dead.
In July 2023, an explosion at a gas facility in the Gulf of Mexico left two workers dead.
