Over 5,500 women in Lahore have filed for divorce in the past eight months with more than 11,000 cases currently pending in court, highlighting a troubling rise in marital breakdowns.
According to court records, many women have cited domestic violence, theft, and abusive behaviour as key reasons for seeking separation.
Lawyers attribute this surge in divorce rates to growing financial pressures and increasing societal intolerance, which are having a negative impact on love and arranged marriages.
One legal expert emphasized that trust is essential in any relationship, noting that even love based marriages struggle when deceit and dishonesty are involved. Many women who have sought divorce reported feeling betrayed and misled by their husbands.
An average of 60 women initiated divorce (khula) cases being filed every day in Lahore. Legal experts stress that love and respect are crucial to maintaining healthy marriages and urge couples to address these issues to prevent further breakdowns. The growing number of divorce cases emphasizes how important it is to address societal and economical issues in order to promote stronger, healthier families.
