The delegation of the World Bank on Monday met with the representatives of the Sindh government and assured support for livestock and fisheries sectors, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel.
The World Bank delegation led by Director South Asia, John A. Roome received a briefing on the rehabilitation work after the flood in Sindh province.
Sindh Adviser on Agriculture Manzoor Wasan and Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Engineer Abdul Bari Khan Patafi requested the delegation’s financial support for completing the rehabilitation work.
The World Bank delegation informed that floods could push 8.4 to 9.1 million people further into poverty. “Livestock, fishing, and agriculture are important sectors, people can be saved from starvation, added the World Bank envoy. Now the modern system of irrigation and drainage has to be introduced. It further stated that the livestock and fisheries sector is not addressed in rehabilitation. However, the delegation assured its full support for the livestock and fisheries sector.
Meanwhile, Sindh Government with the support of the World Bank had fixed the price of wheat as Rs 4000 per forty kilograms in the province.
This was stated by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah during a meeting with the delegation of World Bank led by its Director South Asia John A Roome who called on him in Karachi on Monday.
Syed Murad Ali Shah informed the visiting delegation that steps have been taken for revival of the agriculture sector while financial assistance for wheat seed has been provided to peasants in cooperation with the World Bank.
On the occasion, the World Bank delegation urged to start reconstruction in flood-affected areas and revive the agriculture sector in Sindh.
The delegation was of the view that eight point four to nine point one million more people could be victims of poverty in Pakistan due to floods.
During the meeting, progress on various projects underway in cooperation with the World Bank was also reviewed.
