The final leg of the World Aquatics open water swimming World Cup will take place in Funchal, Portugal due to the conflict in Israel, the sport's governing body announced Thursday.

"Ensuring athlete safety remains the paramount concern for World Aquatics, prompting the decision to relocate the event," World Aquatics said in a statement.

Originally slated for Eilat, a resort on the northern tip of the Red Sea, from December 1-2, it will now take place in Funchal, the capital of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean, from December 2-3.

The competition will feature the men's and women's individual 10km events, followed by the mixed 3x1500m relay the next day.

Other sports have also been affected by the situation in Israel. All international football matches scheduled in Israel over the next two weeks have been postponed by UEFA.

The Israel-Switzerland Euro 2024 qualifier scheduled for this Thursday, has been postponed to November 15, at a location yet to be decided.
