Amazon will invest more than $5 billion in a data center in central Mexico, the country's government and the e-commerce giant said on Tuesday.

Announcing the investment alongside Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, the director of Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Latin America, Paula Bellizia, said the planned center demonstrated Amazon's "commitment to Mexico."

AWS is the world's biggest cloud computing company, with data centers scattered across the globe storing the flood of data from billions of smartphones, tablets, and other connected devices.

With the emergence of generative AI making the demand for data storage bigger than ever, Amazon has announced new projects around the world.

AWS already has a data center in Brazil and has announced plans for another two in the Chilean capital Santiago.
